1959 Chevrolet Impala – Pinky’s ’59

Jose “Pinky” Serna’s search for a 1959 Impala ended when he got a call from his friend Bigg Slice who had a complete ’59 that needed a full restoration. After negotiating a good price, he was able to bring the ’59 home. “I’ve always loved the fins on these cars,” explained Pinky. His friend Bigg Slice also hooked up Pinky with Louie and Mike at Classic Garage in Rialto, California.

Classic Garage did a full frame restoration on the ’59. They used a salmon House of Kolor paint and also installed a 327 engine with a 700-R transmission. Pinky built the five-nine to be a cruiser, so when the 327 started giving carburetor problems, he decided to look for an alternative. He spoke to VMax who told him about the reliable LS motors and took the ’59 to VMax Restorations in Norco, California, where VMax and his crew swapped out the 327 for a 2009 LS3. Pinky decided to have LS engines on all his cars after seeing how much more reliable they are.

“I built the car so that I can have it at church for our wedding.” His wedding date was set for July 4, 2015 and he still needed a few things to do. He kept looking for aftermarket accessories at the swap meets and online. He obtained the LED taillights from The Car Shop in Orange, California, while Victor of Best Polishing in Pomona, California, chromed everything. The final stop before the completion was to California Upholstery in Bell, California, where Joe and crew installed the pink vinyl, leather, and suede. They also installed Alpine deck and all Focal sound system. The ’59 was sitting outside the church during his big day and now he can cruise to all the shows with no worries.

Pinky would like to give a special thanks to his wife Patty, family, and his Maniacos Car Club members. Also thanks to Junior, Louie, Mike and VMax for their help in building the car in a short time period.

New Changes

The ’50s were coming to a close, and many things were rapidly changing. Rock and roll suffered a heavy blow when Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly perished in what became known as “The Day the Music Died.” Cuba became and communist country, and Alaska and Hawaii officially became the 49th and 50th state. It was also a year of change at Chevrolet with some unique design touches. The introduction of the bubbletop rear window was also paralleled by the one-year-only cat-eye taillights. The El Camino was also unveiled, only to be discontinued after the 1960 model and reintroduced in 1964. The Impala also totally redesigned and became a separate series, adding two sedan variations to their offerings. Powerplants remained the same with the 235 six cylinder, and 283 and 348 V-8s. The longer horizontal gauge cluster of ’58 got another facelift with the round gauge cluster similar to that seen in ’57. Even if you weren’t a fan of the ’59 Impala in its entirety, with a total production of about 407,000 total being built, the steering wheel is now a prized commodity among customizers.

2000 Aztlan Bike – Two-Wheeled Dragon

The desire to build a lowrider bicycle came after Moses Espinoza attended his first car show. Moses asked his dad to build him one and he complied. “When we started building the bike we were buying all twisted parts and chroming them. We soon realized that we would never be competitors in the lowrider bike scene this way, so we tore it down and began fully customizing everything.”

2000 aztlan bike air tanks 001

The first step in the rebuild was to come up with a theme. Moses likes dragons so they decided to go with a dragon theme. “It was a challenge to come up with custom parts that didn’t look like everyone else’s.” His dad began building the custom parts; once it was ready, they took it to Gilbert Acosta for a three-tone candy fade paintjob. Alex of 408 Customs added fire-breathing dragon murals to both sides of the bike. Carlos Lema added blue and green striping to complement the paint. Miguel Chavez took care of engraving all the chrome parts. When the bike was finally complete, they decided to debut it at the Lowrider Super Show in Las Vegas as a member of USO’s San Jose Chapter. “We went up against the best in the country and took first place for 20-inch mild, that’s something I’ll never forget.”

Coker Tires & Wheel Vintiques Wheels – Old School New School

We can’t stress how important wheels and tires are to your car. Since it’s part of what gets you back and forth, it has to be reliable enough to trust on long hauls. And like a necktie is to a suit, they’re also two of those design elements that really set off your car’s appearance. Don’t skimp out on either when it comes to your classic ride. Here we’ve picked out a nice cross section of styles in both the metal and rubber department.

Wheel Vintiques offers these three styles in a variety of sizes, bolt patterns, and backspacing options. The Artillery style has been around for many years. It looks awesome on both cars and trucks and comes with the bare finish, but is also offered, for an additional cost, with primer powdercoat options. Accessories are not included and factory lug nuts are applicable. The chrome Supreme is a throwback to ’60s mags and we’re sure it’d look at home on bombs as well as ’70s boats. The full chrome Smoothie is another variation you can’t go wrong with and adds that much more shine to whatever ride is rolling on them.

When it comes to the meats on your ride, there’s everything from lower-profile, thin whitewalls to the pie-cut “gangster whites.” This U.S. Royal 560-15 has a 1-inch whitewall, and made in the USA from the original molds. The pie-cut Firestone whitewall is the world’s best selling line of vintage bias-ply tires. The Coker Classic bias profile radial offers bias-ply looks with radial handling characteristics. 1963 Chevrolet Impala – El Six

Jose Reynoso of National City, California, decided to build a lowrider to keep his kid busy and focused on something positive. His search for a project car began in 2011. He was looking for a 1963 or 1964 Impala; he even traveled up to Los Angeles a few times to find one with no luck. “I got a call from my friend Andres Morales; he had found a ’63 Impala on Craigslist. After getting more information on the car, we found out my cousin Jose Coronado owned it. It was a solid project and I got it for $3,000.”

The 1963 Impala is the most popular for collectors.
The 1963 Impala is the most popular for collectors.

Jose began the three-year project by taking the body off the frame. “Miguel Aguirre would come over to help me work on my car and many times we stayed up until 3 or 4 in the morning to try and finish it for one car show or another.” When the car was finally ready for paint, Jose went with Mike D at Davey’s Auto Body. “It was then that Mike D wanted me to go check out his car club, the Majestics. At the time, I wasn’t planning on joining a club. All I wanted was to build a clean and simple car to cruise in. After hanging out with the Majestics and getting to know them, I liked the unity within the members. They were family oriented and always helped each other.” Jose decided to prospect for the club and a year later he was voted in as a member.

This sports coupe featured a new creased roof line that proved to be a favorite...

Soon after, his niece Joanna Coronado asked me to be her “padrino de honor” at her quincenera. The day of her quincenera was when he brought out his Impala named “El Six 3” for the first time. “Since then, I’ve been cruising it all over San Diego and Tijuana.”

Jose would like to thank Miguel Aguirre for all his help on building the car from bumper to bumper. Mike D for the paintjob, Meza Paints for sponsoring the paint, and all the support from his fellow Majestics members. Special thanks to his wife Alejandra for her patience and support as well as his son Jose Angel for always helping him get the car ready and cleaned for the shows.

Plentiful Power

1963 was indeed a tumultuous time in the country’s history. Beatlemania, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and JFK’s assassination were just some of the things going on. Chevrolet’s Impala was now in its third generation and was offered with four engine choices ranging from the 230ci inline six to the 283, 327, and 409 V-8s. A very rare Z11 427 V-8 was offered as well, just enough to qualify as a production engine for NASCAR competition. It is highly sought after by collectors. Approximately 832,000 Impalas were built, with around 153,000 of those featuring the SS option. The SS upgrade cost $161 dollars at the time and interior features included all vinyl front bucket seats, an SS steering wheel hub, swirl pattern inserts on the dashboard, and (on Powerglide- and four-speed-equipped cars) a center console that had a locking storage compartment. A ’63 Impala SS convertible would’ve run you about $3,185 at the time and was Chevy’s most expensive full-size offering that year.

1958 Chevrolet Nomad – Nomadness

$

The Chevy El Camino — it defies classification. With photos surfacing on the Internet of a supposed reincarnation to be released in 2016, no one knows for sure yet if this truck/car hybrid will be dusted off and brought back to life. What’s been shown so far looks more like a Camaro with a bed, but if it does in fact have the aesthetics we’re seeing and get added to Chevy’s list of retro-inspired rides, only time will tell if it finds favor with the people again almost 30 years after it was discontinued.

1958 chevrolet nomad split personality 002

People often wonder, though, what it might have looked like if it came out just a year earlier than when it was originally introduced in 1959. Gene Bare probably had those visions as well when he became the owner of a rusty four-door ’58 Nomad that originally belonged to his father. Since the body rot was so substantial, restoring it became a bigger challenge than customizing it. After seeing something similar at the SEMA show, Gene decided to wind the clock back and turn it into a ’58 El Camino. Onlookers might wonder if perhaps he was the lucky owner of some concept car that Chevrolet never released to the public.

Going from the bottom up, the stock frame was powdercoated with the A arms and trailing arms molded and chromed, and the rear arms extended 1 inch. AirMaxxx airbags keep everything suspended and two Optima yellow top batteries keep all the power flowing to two compressors, a 20-gallon tank hidden underneath, and 1/2-inch valves with work done by Gene and Santiago from Krazy Kutting. The stock rearend was shortened to clear the custom-made skirts.

1958 chevrolet nomad front badge 007

A supercharged LS1 bored .30 over with a larger Comp cam and Edelbrock manifold is tied to a 4L60E to put plenty of power to the 72-spoke Chinas. CPP disc brakes with a chrome booster and master cylinder bring it all to a quick stop. A Griffin aluminum radiator keeps it all cool, while Edelbrock headers spit the fumes into 2 and 1/2-inch exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers.

1958 chevrolet nomad split personality 003

Gene gave the body some long-overdue love to remove the rusty parts and cut the rear wagon section off to bring it into El Camino status. Trim pieces are difficult to find for ’58 Nomads, so some aftermarket Impala trim was also used. Other parts. such as the back chrome for the tailgate, were sourced elsewhere. The visor came off a Pontiac of similar vintage, while the bed wood was originally intended for a pickup with stainless strips being picked up off eBay.

1958 chevrolet nomad pulleys 046

Since it was originally a four-door wagon, the front doors were extended and back doors welded up. The hood was molded as was the inside of the bed. The car was shot in House of Kolor tangelo over a pink base. The original rear window that opened on the back of the Nomad still opens on the current version of the car. Pinstriping was done by Chavo from Phoenix, while the engraving was handled by Cadillac Jay. All in all, the original designers of the El Camino would’ve been floored by this creation had it appeared back in the day.

1958 chevrolet nomad taillight 013

Inside, the floorboards were replaced and the dash was molded in. A custom center console sits between ’65 T-Bird seats upholstered in tan leather by Jose Rodriguez and sit on Mercedes tan carpet. Summit digital gauges sit in the center above an ididit column, and a Vintage Air A/C unit. A Pioneer head unit with Phoenix Gold amps, and Rockford Fosgate speakers make it sound as good as it looks.

1958 chevrolet nomad door handle 020

Gene considers it a finished build, but knows it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of his family. We love seeing radical departures from the norm like this and hope it won’t be the last pie-in-the-sky car where someone wonders what a particular model would look like in a year it was never actually made.

Truck or Car?

Since it’s classified in North America as a truck and has a bed, some would say it’s a truck. Others would disagree because it’s on a passenger car chassis. However you prefer to classify it, the El Camino was introduced in 1959 as Chevy’s answer to Ford’s Ranchero, which was released two years earlier. Although initial sales were promising, the El Camino was discontinued after the 1960 model was produced because orders were dismally low. It was reintroduced again in 1964 on the A-body platform, same as the Chevelle, and even plateaued with the same 454 powerplant until the muscle car era began to die off and smaller, more efficient engines were the new focus. In 1978 it was changed to the G-body platform until it was discontinued in 1987, eight years after the last Ranchero was produced. GMC offered their version, first known as the Sprint in 1971 and the name changed in 1978 to the Caballero. It lasted until the El Camino also ceased production. Concept cars have been created in the ensuing years in an attempt to revitalize interest in the El Camino, but so far nothing has ever been put into production.

2015 Carnales Unidos Bakersfield Super Show

Forty years ago back in April 1975, a crowd of lowriders from the Bakersfield area were gathered at the local car wash. When they all got together there they came up with the idea of forming a car club that would benefit the different areas and neighborhoods within the community. From that instant on, these united brothers would choose a name that would best represent what they would all stand for, and they became the Carnales Unidos.

A Groupe hall takeover.
A Groupe hall takeover.

Their mission began by staging benefit events to support their local communities, such as car washes, parades, March of Dimes charity dances, and Toys for Tots benefit car shows. Four decades have gone by and the traditions remain the same as generations and chapters of the Carnales Unidos continue their quest to support their cities and become great role models through the lowrider movement.

To help celebrate their legacy and 40th anniversary this year, LOWRIDER Magazine partnered up with the Carnales Unidos and sanctioned their annual Bakersfield Super Show to help out as they once again strive to benefit their community by funding the local Kern County Cancer Foundation this past August. The festive atmosphere began on Saturday as over 500 lowriders swarmed the Fairgrounds. There were a lot of quality full custom rides on display as this was the last show on the circuit to qualify for the top Lowrider honor awards at the Vegas Super Show.

Another top-notch '61.
Another top-notch ’61.

As Sunday’s show began, there was plenty of music, food, booths, and the always-entertaining hopping contest. Hubbard’s Impala “NOS” Parts were on hand as well as the fabrication factory known as Krazy Kutting. The Groupe and Klique Car Clubs also came out in full force, taking over all the space in both indoor halls. Though it was a hot one out there, the crowd came out in full support of this grand annual event, just like in the past great shows that the Carnales have hosted.

Caddy-Lime.
Caddy-Lime.

Lowrider Hall of Famer Harvey Reyes, his club, and family would like to say that, as they continue to commit to those in need, that they couldn’t do this without the continued help and support from all the various car clubs and individuals who have been there throughout the years. As the trophy presentation ended that day and everyone began to load up their rides on trailers for their journey back home, you could see the pride that everyone had for the support and commitment toward traditions and charitable events. It left even a sunburnt crowd feeling proud for their genuine efforts to benefit the event for a cure.

2001 Harley-Davidson Road King – Old Habits Die Hard

We all have our bad habits or “malvicios,” as some would call them. No matter how big or small, we all have something that can become a borderline obsession. For some it’s collecting LOWRIDER Magazines, while others fixate over owning every possible NOS accessory ever made for their vehicle. For Ruben Salazar, his obsession involves the open road and a customized Harley-Davidson constructed of good old-fashioned American iron.

Twisted ape hangars, extended fishtails, and killer custom paint make this Road King the king of the road!
Twisted ape hangars, extended fishtails, and killer custom paint make this Road King...

After owning several Harleys, Ruben’s childhood fascination would eventually lead him to building this full custom 2001 Road King, aptly named “Malvicio.” No stranger to customizing, he began his latest creation with a visit to Cisco Customs, who would prep and spray the various candy pearl combinations with Alex of Modern Art adding line after line of accenting colors and silver leafing, giving this bike its signature look.2001 harley davidson road king front fender 004

With a pair of 21-inch and 18-inch chrome 80-spoke wire wheels mounted onto Metzeler whitewall tires, Locote Style Custom would then install a custom Platinum air ride system. With the heart and soul of this build chromed and polished by Metro Plating in Mesa, Arizona, the 2001 HD 95 big-bore with a five-speed transmission was then fitted with Buky Bar pipes as well twisted custom handle bars and a complete Kenwood audio system.

We all know bad habits are hard to break and Ruben has no plans on even trying. But he did want to thank his wife, Angie, for putting up with his vice. He also thanks everyone else that helped in creating this rolling masterpiece, especially the crew at Locote Style Customs.

1972 Chevrolet Caprice – Serial Thriller

$

We’re all aware of how many people think that fixing up an old car and putting more money into it than you’d get out of it is a form of insanity. That may be true, but it’s a diagnosis we’re all OK with, particularly since we believe most of the people who say that are crazy for buying newer cars that hold their value about as well as Cabbage Patch Kids. As is often the case with these builds, things tend to spiral into a direction we hadn’t previously anticipated. While things may get a little crazy, when it’s all done we can look back and be happier with the finished product than what we’d initially set out to create.

The best of both worlds—a '72 Caprice with a '73 rear bumper.
The best of both worlds—a ’72 Caprice with a ’73 rear bumper.

By his own admission, Peter Fekete’s “Serial Killer” ’72 Caprice “got a little crazier” than what he thought he’d end up with when the build got underway. You’re probably wondering where the name came from and if there’s a body in the trunk, but more on that later. It did indeed get a bit out of control, but it definitely stands out as both one of the less common years of Caprices on the road, and also a true old-school lowrider.

Powering the Caprice is the original 400 small-block V-8, candied in the same exterior paint and dressed up with plenty of chrome, a new Edelbrock carb, and headers that are plumbed into Flowmaster mufflers that are cut right before the axle. It’s all tied to a 700-R4 trans and stock front discs along with rear ABS discs to keep the Daytons coming to a quick stop.

Underneath, the car has been lifted slightly with a chrome undercarriage, belly pan painted, and powdercoated frame. A Pro Hopper setup consists of two pumps hardlined to three Adex square dumps, 8-inch cylinders front and back, and five batteries. Work was done by both Chuck and Tim Rodriguez. The stock rearend was shortened to clear the skirts and done by Cooks in L.A.

The interior is definitely a lesson in insanity and has a lot going on. With sort of a drag bike theme, the center console was made from a Harley split tank and has a console to conceal the switch panel and Clarion stereo. A custom billet grille fills the cluster area where the Dakota Digital gauges reside. It’s all sitting above a chrome stock column and Colorado Custom wheel. The all-leather interior is accented by metal panels throughout. Front seats came from an ’01 Infiniti and the rear seats are custom made. Work was done by Henry’s Interior with The Dragon Shop doing all the metalwork.

Since there isn’t much aftermarket support for Caprices of this era, Peter opted to get rid of much of what he couldn’t find and give it a cleaner look. Side mirrors, keyholes, exterior door handles, and various moldings were ditched and the body was treated to an orange pearl base by Pete Caldera with pinstriping by the late Walt Prey. A 42-inch sunroof was added, along with molding the bumpers and under the hood.

1972 chevy caprice rear bumper 014

Peter would like to thank his wife Angela, Pete Caldera, Tim Rodriguez, and especially his mom for giving him the support to finish Serial Killer. And as far as that name goes, there was a time when a dead body was found in the house directly across the street from Peter’s mom’s house. Peter was seen by friends and club members in the background of the news broadcast covering the event, and ended up earning that nickname, which he also gave to his car. The both of them are now at large, roaming the streets of Southern California.
Arguably one of the best luxury-designed Caprices.

GoodbyeBigCars

Along with the big news of 1972 being the Watergate Scandal, John DeLorean leaving GM to start his own company, and the premier of The Godfather, big cars were about to become a thing of the past. With stricter regulations being passed and the Arab Oil Embargo that happened the following year, the Chevy Caprice was one of the last of its kind. A two-door version like this tipped the scales at about 4,100 pounds and cost around $4,026. The ’72 Caprice received an updated grille that was lower than those on the ’71 models and given new bumpers with a stronger “bumper within a bumper design.” The rear had the triple taillights now mounted in the bumper. Engine offerings were the same as 1971 with the change to “net” horsepower ratings, including 170 hp for the standard two-barrel 400ci Turbo Fire V-8, 210 hp for the four-barrel Turbo Jet 400 big-block V-8 (which was actually 402 ci), and 270 hp for the four-barrel dual exhaust 454ci Turbo Jet V-8. New to the Caprice lineup was a pillared four-door sedan, which had a front design similar to the ’67-’70 Eldorado.

1965 Chevrolet Impala Wagon – Outside the Box

If you were a kid growing up and your parents had one of these station wagons that you got brought back and forth to school and little league games with, you might have felt a little embarrassed. Who knew that these big station wagons would go on to be sought after since they’re a bit more unusual and comparatively uncommon to what we see at shows now. We love it when we see people save these from the scrap heap and break from the traditional sport coupe versions of Impalas. While it may have felt like a chop to have owned or ridden in one back in the day, Woody Moldenhauer’s ’65 Impala wagon is living proof that many of us probably wish mom and dad had held onto that old wagon.

1965 chevrolet impala wagon driver side profile 002

Woody got a heads up about an ad for this wagon from a fellow Down IV Life Car Club member. The price was right and, since it was essentially a one-owner car that’d been taken care of, it was about as rust free as one could want on a car this old. After bringing it back home in its stock white color, the original plan was just to keep it as a driver, but one thing led to another. The idea to repaint it in another factory turquoise color was the flashpoint that segued into painting the belly to match and chrome out the underpinnings instead of keeping them black. So the idea to keep it as a driver kept moving forward toward a clean lowrider platform.

1965 chevrolet impala wagon zenith wheel center cap 021 1965 chevrolet impala wagon passenger side profile 013 1965 chevrolet impala wagon 396 badge 019

The belly was split and frame given a full wrap with extended ’64 Chevy upper arms and stock lower arms. New trailing arms were also dropped in with adjustable uppers. Two Pitbull pumps, Adex dumps, and 8-inch cylinders all around are powered by eight batteries. The back cylinders are custom reverse stroke with powerballs on the bottom that have deep cups to keep it from going into the body.

Once upon a time a family-type "drive-in" vehicle, it now sets up on display for car show competition.
Once upon a time a family-type “drive-in” vehicle, it now sets up on...

Under the hood still resides the original 396, rebuilt with an Edelbrock intake and carb, and aluminum radiator. The original trans was exchanged for a 350 that Woody is contemplating replacing with a four-speed one day. The interior was given a fresh stock appearance with a factory-appearing radio that powers modern components.

1965 chevrolet impala wagon factory steering wheel 005

Outside, the body was given extra attention. Not only was it treated to House of Kolor Artisan Turquoise with all the seams welded up and pearl patterns on the roof, but the extensive wet sanding and nine coats of clear make it really pop. You won’t find any waves on this car. All bodywork was done by Woody’s brother-in-law and rolling on 13×7 Zeniths gives it just the right touch.

1965 chevrolet impala wagon front bumper 011

Woody would like to throw out a thank you to Justin Askew, Jamie Shelley, and the rest of his Down IV Life club. Unfortunately Jamie passed away and Woody has assumed the helm on some of his projects. We wish him well with the completion and look forward to seeing the finished products as well as this land yacht of a wagon out on the road.

Fourth Time Around

In 1965, the first combat troops arrived in Vietnam for what began a long war. On the civil rights front, the Selma demonstrations were happening in Alabama. My Fair Lady won Best Picture. Change was all around us and the Impala entered its fourth generation with totally new styling. Although it later became legendary, 1965 was the last year for Chevy’s 409 block, which was replaced by the 396, the second biggest block offered that year. The X-frame on GM full-size cars was now replaced by a full perimeter frame. And the Caprice option was now an upgrade to Impalas. It was also Chevy’s highest selling year of the decade. Impala wagons could be had with a V-8 or inline-six, but were only available as four-door versions. The configuration for wagons could be the standard six passenger or people could opt for the nine-passenger version with a rearward-facing bench seat. No SS option was available for the wagon. This six-passenger V-8 option wagon would’ve run you about $3,078 back in the day.

Impact Wrench Reviews – Sudden Impact

So you’ve all bruised and bloodied enough knuckles with wrenches and breaker bars trying to free a stubborn bolt or nut from its place of residence. It’s right about that time that you wondered why you hadn’t invested in an impact wrench to make life a little easier. Of course, impact wrenches aren’t always practical for every situation since space is often a limiting factor in working on our rides, but they definitely find more uses than just pit crews using them to remove wheels at races.

Of course that also brings up an interesting question in itself, do you want a rechargeable version or a corded version? They all have their benefits and disadvantages, but we thought these were the two categories that made the most sense to our readers since pneumatic wrenches are less common for the average DIYer. We picked out one from each category from two manufacturers known for their top-shelf power tools — Milwaukee and Kobalt. Here we’ll give you some basic info and apples-to-apples specs on each so you can decide which works best for your purposes.

First we’ll start with the obvious. Portable, rechargeable units can be brought with you if you’re road trip suddenly incurs unexpected roadside repairs where tools like this could come in handy. Try finding a power source when you’ve broken down. Plus they can reach places that, even at home, you might not have enough cord length to get to. They do, however, eventually run out of juice. The corded versions have a consistent supply of torque, but again, aren’t always the best choice if you’re on the go or trying to get into a tight spot. If you’re looking to cover your arse in either situation, buy one of each. We put them toe to toe in each category so you know what to ask for when your birthday gets close.

With 350 lb-ft of torque, we were only moderately impressed with its power, but liked the fact that it came with two lithium-ion batteries and a charging station. The manufacturer claims that the batteries can be charged within an hour and it has a built-in LED so you can see what you’re doing in the dark. It comes in a handy carrying case and can be yours to the tune of about $260.

This thing has two modes, the second of which provides a staggering 700 lb-ft of torque (double the Kobalt) and 1,100 lb-ft of “nut busting” torque. It also has an LED light, but guess what, no battery packs, charger, or carrying case. You have to buy those separately. You could pick this puppy up for about $220, but you’ll need to fork over about another $200 for the kit that comes complete with extra batteries, charger, and case.

1983 Cadillac Coupe DeVille – Love Her Madly

Mike Salcido of Pico Rivera, California, saw his first lowrider at the age of 15. He’s owned several lowriders, but his current 1983 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, “Love Her Madly” shares a special place in his heart because it’s the same year his son Michael Jr. was born. Mike originally purchased his Coupe DeVille in 1993 from a woman in Westwood, California. Of course his first modification to the Caddy was a brand-new set of 100-spoke all-chrome Daytons. Subsequently a year later, his friend John Romero added the hydraulic setup. Mike saw the potential for greatness as the car began to win at every car show it appeared.

As with many projects, this car had a lot of ups and downs and several friends and relatives contributed to its upbringing. After the original paint started to fade, Mike’s friend, Ruben from Ontario, California, stripped the original paint, molded the hood, and blocked the car. The Euro clip was bought from Mike over at Cadillac Connect of Orange County, California. Sunroof Performers out of South Gate, California, installed the sunroof. Mike reached out to his cousin, Roy Magdaleno, a retired Lifestyle Car Club member, and convinced him to paint his Caddy. Unfortunately, the car sat for several years due to financial difficulties and was almost sold in 2003. Fortunately, after Mike met his wife, Anita, things started to turn the corner; she convinced him to keep and finish the car.

Once again, Mike called his cousin Roy and they spent endless hours sanding, prepping, and painting the car out of the front yard of his house. Mike and Roy painted the car four times until they were satisfied with the old-school brandywine color. Dennis Jones from Whittier, California, did the 24-karat gold leafing and striping, and Rick Mungz of Monterrey Park, California, painted the murals.

1983 cadillac coupe deville dashboard 006

All the chrome work was done by Jose at Choice Bumper in Santa Fe Springs, California, and the hydraulics were redone by Ray Gonzalez of Santa Fe Springs. Mike Perez of Whittier, California, did an original makeover on the interior and the sound system was installed by Tony Gonzales of Kolors Kustom. Mike’s mother-in-law, Evely Turner, contributed to the project by building the display he uses when he shows the car.

Mike would like to send out a special thanks to Roy Magdaleno, Rick Munoz, and his compadres, Rudy Santos, Hector Ortiz, Evelyn Turner, Robert Amaya, Mike at Cadillac Connect, his wife, children, and “Buddy” for all their support and patience.

To celebrate the culture, heritage, and lifestyle of the classic lowrider, Exodus Events orchestrated a one-night shindig called “L.A. Story.” The event, which was held at the Plaza de La Raza in Lincoln Park, became home for thousands of spectators who took to the walls to appreciate the art, and later in the evening, lent their eyes, ears, and feet to musical performances by LRS Xposure and the legendary headliner, Tierra.

Founded by Antonio Pelayo and co-founder, Steve Guerrero from Exodus Events, L.A. Story was a mid-summer night affair that gave us all a chance to soak in the past, while enjoying the present. Aside from sharing our culture and giving us good ambiance to revel in, the event also served as a benefit for Plaza de La Raza.

This sweet bomb was a crowd favorite and we can see why.

Hosted by Compton Dave and Lala Romero, the event was also sponsored by Petersen Museum, as well as Lowrider Magazine. In all, it was a great event, which we hope will repeat itself, and the pictures speaks a thousand tales about a night that attendees won’t forget, and a night of regret for those who weren’t able to make it out.

’54 Bomb Truck Drivetrain Install – From the Floor Up

$

Building your dream vehicle is a matter of patience, absolute commitment, and a definite game plan. Far too often, we start builds with what we can afford, and soon thereafter, we end up breaking budgets in order to finish our dream vehicles.

But it’s not a bad problem to have. Building your dream vehicle is all about sacrifice. We put in those extra hours, skimp on meals, and sometimes we put off the repair of leaky roof and much-needed household maintenance, but then again, that’s what makes these builds so precious.

Time To Get Framed

So when the owner of this pickup wanted to revamp it, his initial plans were to go with a good paintjob and a boxed frame, but soon after looking at the total cost involved with boxing the frame and retrofitting the suspension, he ended up opting for a fresh frame from TCI.

By going with a TCI frame, it actually saved money, while providing a stellar, fresh frame with quality components.

54 bomb truck drivetrain install tci truck frame 001

After placing the initial order, the frame was delivered shortly thereafter, and it not only took out a lot of the laborious hours of work needed for freshening up an older frame, but also breathed new life into this truck. With the frame unboxed, it was time to bolt up the goodies, which started with a set of Wilwood brakes.

The Wilwood brake package eliminates the previous drum and skimpy factory brakes and gives this behemoth of a truck the ability to stop on a dime.

54 bomb truck drivetrain install wilwood disc brake system 002

Absolute Power

The next phase in this build was to give it a new powerplant. For this particular build, they opted for Chevrolet’s LSX376-B15 race motor. This crate motor features forged internals and six-bolt LSX heads that can support plenty of boost. But if boosted powerplants aren’t your thing, then remember that in stock configuration it pushes 450 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. Not too shabby for a truck that doesn’t weigh too much. Now remember, those dyno numbers were based on a normally aspirated LSX376 using an LS3 EFI.

54 bomb truck drivetrain install lsx376 b15 race motor 003

But if you ever plan on going with forced induction then rest assured that it can handle up to 15 pounds of boost, thanks to its LS steel standard-deck block, forged-steel crankshaft, and forged pistons and rods.

54 bomb truck drivetrain install lsx376 crate motor 004

Now once you take a look at the picture, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s void of an intake and that’s because this crate motor allows it’s owners to custom tailor the induction system to run naturally aspirated or with high-boost using either a turbo or supercharger.

You Blew A Tranny?

Sorry, but every time I hear a friend say, “I blew a tranny,” I can’t help but chuckle. It just sounds wrong. Regardless, we know of a way you can prevent those dreaded words and that’s by simply installing a good and reliable transmission.

54 bomb truck drivetrain install 4l85 transmission 005

For this particular application, we went with a 4L85 transmission, sometimes referred to as a 4L80. This transmission is an evolution of the Turbo-Hydromatic 400 and it’s a reputable transmission, which can easily handle the power of the LSX376. Luis from House of Pain simply mated the transmission to the motor and bolted it up.

Getting Mounted

54 bomb truck drivetrain install cpp motor mounts 006

54 bomb truck drivetrain install cpp motor mounts 007

Now to mount the motor to the frame, an additional piece was needed and that was the motor mount kit from CPP. Motor mounts may not look “pretty,” but they’re an essential part of not only holding your motor in place, but they also affect the quality and performance of your ride.

Getting The Shaft

54 bomb truck drivetrain install inland empire driveline driveshaft 008

54 bomb truck drivetrain install inland empire driveline driveshaft 009

To tie the motor into the rearend, a driveshaft from Inland Empire Driveline was acquired. Their work and quality is unmatched and this particular piece was hand crafted with the shaft tube placed on a lathe. From there the shaft tube is deburred, prepped for welding, and then a tube yoke is pressed into end before getting welded.

Breathe Easy

So in simple terms, our engines have a power stroke and an exhaust stroke and it’s during the power stroke that “backpressure” will cause an engine to lose power. It loses power when the exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the gases out of the cylinder. It’s during this reaction, that “resistance” becomes your motor’s worst enemy. The resistance that the piston has to push against becomes your enemy. This is where power is wasted, and this is how headers help out.

Galaxy Allstar offers LS-series block huggers in stainless or ceramic.
Galaxy Allstar offers LS-series block huggers in stainless or ceramic.

Headers eliminate backpressure by guiding gasses through equal-length tubes that meet in what’s called a “collector tube.” By having the tubes the same length it helps guarantee that the flow of exhaust gasses and pressure don’t fight against each other thus reducing backpressure and increasing overall horsepower.

Stay tuned for the rest of this build, as we take the next step forward and begin the disassembly process in order to get the frame painted and finalized. We’ll also touch base on the suspension setup as well as the final details, which will help wrap this project ’54 bomb truck up.

Monthly Tech Tip

e3 spark plugs logo

E3 Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Fault Diagnosis

“Out with the old, and in with the new – E3 Spark Plugs.”

Let’s start this tech tip with a New Year’s Resolution. Begin the year by replacing your corroded, worn-out spark plugs. E3 Spark plugs not only come with the advanced DiamondFire Technology, their newly developed design of components are made for improved horsepower, increased fuel efficiency, and reduction in engine emissions, too!

If your ride idle has a miss or is running sluggish, chances are that when you remove one of your plugs you will find the following visual problems holding back your car or truck’s performance.

1) A worn-out-looking spark plug that has been left in an engine too long will have rounded electrodes with a small amount of deposits at the firing end. This will cause hard starting in damp or cold weather and poor fuel economy.

2) Spark plugs that look as though they have “carbon deposits” indicate a rich mixture or weak ignition. This will cause misfiring and hard starting.

3) The “ash deposit” look in a plug reveals light brown deposits encrusted on the side or center electrodes. This problem comes from oil and or fuel additives.

4) Spark plugs that contain “oil deposits” are caused by oil leaking past worn valve guides or piston rings into the combustion chamber.

5) “Gap bridging” in spark plugs happens when combustion deposits lodge between the electrodes. Heavy deposits accumulate and bridge the electrode gap. The plug ceases to fire, resulting in a dead cylinder.

6) A spark plug that becomes “too hot” will have a blistered look in the white insulator that will result in shortened plug life. Always check for the correct plug heat range.

Serious automotive firepower starts with a spark. E3 Spark Plugs can help you create a fire-breathing street or strip beast with its line of spark plugs featuring E3’s advanced DiamondFire electrode design. This exclusive design is tested and proven to increase flame speed, improve the direction of the flame front, and build combustion pressure within the engine. That means more power, better fuel mileage, and reduced emissions. Choose a set of plugs from their huge inventory. Ignite your vehicle’s full performance potential.

1949 Chevrolet Convertible – Post WWII Era Style

Way, way back in 1949, Chevrolet presented a whole new style of automobile after World War II. The latest design would have a lower, sleeker profile, with the lines of the front fenders smoothly blending into the doors to be countered by the rear fenders that continued to bow out of the sides of the car. Two-piece curved windshields not only improved better vision, but also added to the overall sleeker look.

1949 chevrolet convertible spare tire 001

There were 14 new models divided into the Fleetline and Styleline model series. The Fleetline had both two- and four-door fastbacks, while the Styleline was represented by notchback styles of sedans, coupes, station wagons, and the very nice-looking convertible. There were two types of trim levels added for the ’49 back then. There was the Special and then the nicer package called DeLuxe, which featured the very popular fender skirts.

Today these early “bomb”-style Chevrolets have become restoration projects of passion for old classic car builders like Jesse Sanchez who resides in the large lowrider city of Salt Lake, Utah. This showroom-looking piece of Americana art was once out in the fields rusting away as a parts car filled with bullet holes from target practice.

Jesse, like many of other car enthusiasts, had family responsibilities that often came first before he could take on the dedication it takes to drag a project car into his garage to begin a time consuming hobby. With the help of his son, he would build his own rotisserie for the frame and begin the sandblasting and the metal fabricating to patch up the rusted areas of the body.

The '49 Chevy DeLuxe package featured the must-have rear fender skirts.

New for 1949

Chevy revamped their Deluxe line in 1949 with an array of changes. It’d marked the first complete redesign since the end of World War II, and part of its popularity is credited to the fact that it mimicked many styling cues from higher-end GM cars, such as the Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac, and Pontiac. The notchback models were now called the Styleline series, while the fastbacks were known as Fleetlines. Both were available in the “Special” or upgraded “DeLuxe” trim levels. The improvements Chevy touted were widened doors, rear passengers seated ahead of (rather than on top of) the rear axle for more comfort, push-button door handles, hydraulic brakes, and knee-action shocks. Wheelbase was now 115 inches, with a slightly smaller 11-inch brake diameter. A Styleline DeLuxe convertible like this one would have weighed around 3,375 pounds, had a price tag of about $1,857, and was one of 32,392 that were produced that year. The 216 inline-six was the only engine for passenger cars and came with a three-speed manual transmission.

Back in 1938 Vic Edelbrock founded the corporation when his desire to increase the performance of his 1932 Ford roadster led him to design a new intake manifold. His friends and fellow drivers also wanted one. This would transform his garage repair business into a parts manufacturing enterprise, making one-of-a-kind equipment for automobiles. In many ways, Vic Edelbrock helped to invent the automotive aftermarket parts industry.

Today, Edelbrock manufactures over 8,000 automotive parts for racers and hobbyists, as well as their continued quest for increased performance. When increasing the maximum performance in your ride, the first step is selecting the right manifold. Edelbrock has several styles of aluminum intake manifolds to fit different year, make, and model applications. Each style of manifold has certain characteristics that make it ideal for the application for which it’s intended.

Edelbrock products are reliable and undeniable when it comes to performance and mpg.

Years of design and testing in the area of induction technology have given the Edelbrock team valuable insights into what characteristics work best under specific conditions. To have a look at their quality performance products, and check out how they are manufactured, the Lowrider staff drove out to the Edlebrock headquarters to go on a special tour given by our longtime good friends Smitty Smith and Eric Blakely. There we got to see their intake manifolds being cast at their ultramodern aluminum foundry and brought to life on computerized machining centers right before our eyes.

Plastic Fantastic

Let’s start off 2016 by introducing the right preparation and practice for all things plastic or rubber that need be painted on today’s vehicles. We need to ensure that we have the best adhesion and lasting longevity on plastics because they are always the first parts to go bad on a vehicle’s paintjob life. Axalta has a plastic cleaning paste product known as 2310 S. The process for using 2310 S to prepare new unprimed plastic parts is very simple. Step 1: prewash the plastic parts with warm water. Step 2: Use a gold 3M Scotch-Brite pad with Axalta’s 2310 S cleaning paste and prep it on thoroughly. Step 3: Rinse the plastic parts with warm water and make sure there is no dry residue left behind. Step 4: Be sure to dry the parts immediately following the rinse cycle to ensure there is no leftover dry residue. Step 5: Apply the Axalta adhesion promoter of choice, depending on regulated areas you are working with and let it flash for 20 to 30 minutes. The last step will be using the primer of your choice depending on regulated areas. If you are applying sealer, let it flash for 20 minutes, but do not wait longer than 45 minutes. From there, go ahead and apply the basecoat directly on top, no sanding is required. If you are priming it you must let it dry thoroughly, then prep the bumper with the right sandpaper and apply your basecoat to achieve good adhesion going forward.

Dominic Perales’s father began looking for a bike when he realized that he was outgrowing his Taylor Tot. He was lucky enough to find one on eBay. “It was in great condition and I was able to get it for $100.” Once “Lil Tiger” came in, he took it apart and sent out a few parts to Miguel Chavez for engraving and plating, and the rest to New Age Plating.

Vintage Schwinn Lil Tigers were made from 1970 to 1980.
Vintage Schwinn Lil Tigers were made from 1970 to 1980.

The hardest part of the build was deciding on a candy paint for the bike. Once they decided on a House of Kolor yellow pearl, it was taken to Gilbert Acosta to have it sprayed. Raul Delgado added patterns and Smudge in San Jose, California, added the striping. Wesos used white vinyl to bring back the seat to its original form.

They were able to complete the bike build before the Socios car show in Sacramento, California. “It was important for us to make that show as that was the first show he attended with his Taylor Tot and now with his Lil Tiger.”

1970 Chevrolet Caprice – OCD Caprice

There are many different custom paths you can take when dealing with a classic vehicle. Some people restore them to stock, while others customize them to be lifted up or lowered. For 39-year-old Perry Bunker of Anderson, South Carolina, when he thinks of classic Chevys there is only way to build them.

1970 chevrolet caprice front grille 004

In 2012, a friend and fellow member of Obsession C.C., Deon, purchased a 1970 Chevy Caprice that had been lifted with larger wheels. The Chevy was brought to Perry for paint and body, while Deon reworked the motor. The bumpers and trim were all sent out to be chromed and step by step the Caprice was brought back down to the ground.

1970 chevrolet caprice pasenger side rear window 005

Perry continued to press away, making sure that every detail was completed for his friend. After numerous weeks of Perry’s hard work and love going toward the build, somewhere along the line he started to fall in love with the project. With a full arsenal of project classics at his disposal, Perry offered a trade for an Impala he was working on. The deal was made and the hard work he had put in was now his own.

1970 chevrolet caprice interior 009

Combining the restored feel with his passion for lowriding, Perry looks at his classic as the best of both worlds. As the owner and operator of Prime Towing in South Carolina, Perry is always on the move. He is a longtime member of the Obsession Car Club and he makes sure his Caprice makes it to almost every show. He wishes to thank everyone who helped him along the way to make King Kracker the classic beauty it is today. Special thanks to Deon Willis, Ron Bunker, Murr, and everyone that told him he would never make it. There is nothing like success to breed motivation.

Eddie Motorsport S-Drive Pulley System Install

We could’ve titled this story “lipsticking the pig” but the LS series of engines from Chevrolet are certainly not pigs in terms of performance. But, in regards to looks, they can’t hold a candle to older engines we’ve all grown up with. The main problem with LS engines is clutter. All those fuel lines, injectors, coil packs, brackets, and such just drag down how good the engine can look with a little work and the right parts

The main problem with our shiny new Chevrolet Performance LS3 crate engine (PN 19391326) was that it's rather homely looking. The other issue was that it needed a pulley system to get it functioning in one of our classic Chevys. Yeah, we could run a GM pulley system, but that doesn't help us in the looks department. Also, GM always wants to run the A/C unit low on the passenger side, which is typically a no-go deal when doing an engine swap
The main problem with our shiny new Chevrolet Performance LS3 crate engine (PN...

The other less-than-attractive aspect of newer GM LS engines is the drive system. To be fair, GM is more concerned with putting out a rock-solid and dependable pulley system rather than how pleasing it is to the eye. Also, most GM cars have the A/C mounted low on the passenger side of the engine, so typically this is where the GM drive kits tend to put it as well. This location proves to be more than just a bit problematic when stuffing LS power into vintage Chevy iron and, besides, the GM-style A/C compressor rarely works with aftermarket A/C kits. Some companies offer bracket kits to work with the GM pulley systems and mount a Sanden A/C compressor high on the passenger side, but that doesn’t address the GM system’s lack of good looks. For that we need to turn to the aftermarket. When you go with a system, like the one we’re trying from Eddie Motorsports, you get a kit designed for our older Chevys and as a bonus, it’s very good looking.

So, follow along as we turn an ugly duckling of an LS engine into something that will slide right into your favorite Chevy and look good as well.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system ati super damper install 002

1. We start out by installing the S-Drive pulley system from Eddie Motorsports. First up was installing the ATI Super Damper that came in the kit. ATI makes some of the nicest dampers on the market, so it was good to see it in the kit. It also gave us a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that the kit is made in the USA

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system passenger side long studs 003

2. We then installed three 92mm-long studs to the passenger side of the block. It’s very important to use antiseize on any steel (especially stainless) bolts going into the aluminum block. The studs were screwed in until they protruded 3 inches.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system driver side long studs 004

3. Two 118mm-long studs were installed on the driver side and adjusted until they stuck out 4 inches.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system tuff stuff water pump 005

4. After installing the included gaskets we slid on the provided Tuff Stuff water pump.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system spacer posts 006

5. After applying more antiseize, we installed three 3/4×2.55-inch spacer posts to the passenger-side studs.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system alternator bracket 007

6. The first bracket to go on was for the rear of the alternator. It went over the two long studs on the driver side of the water pump and was secured with two 3/4×1.41-inch spacer posts and one 95mm-long cap screw.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system ac compressor bracket 008

7. The lower A/C compressor bracket was bolted to the passenger head with two 20mm-long cap screws. The S-Drive kit can be ordered with or without A/C and in finishes like black, polished, and satin.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system compressor bracket 009

8. After installing the water neck onto the water pump, the compressor bracket was attached to the three spacer studs on the water pump with three 25mm-long cap screws.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system sanden sd7 ac compressor 010

9. The Sanden SD7 A/C compressor from the kit was bolted to the bracket with two 25mm-long cap screws at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system ac compressor bolts 011

10. The rear of the compressor was secured with a specialized stainless shoulder bolt. Can you guess what we put on the threads first?

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system ac compressor beauty cover 012

11. Three 1/4-20 cap screws were used to install the compressor beauty cover. Be careful here not to overtighten. Blue thread locker was used on the three fasteners.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system alternator bracket 013

12. Two 25mm-long cap screws, with washers, secured the alternator bracket in place. For now we just finger tightened these.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system powermaster alternator 014

13. The 140-amp Powermaster alternator already had a billet pulley and fan installed so we only had to bolt it to the S-Drive system with one 25mm- and one 80mm-long cap screw.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system water pump pulley 015

14. Four 5/16×3/4-inch cap screws locked the water pump pulley in place. This time we used a little red thread locker.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system crank pulley bolts 016

15. The three 3/8×1 and 1/4-inch crank pulley bolts used special Belleville washers. These use a spring action to lock the bolts in place.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system spacer posts install 017

16. After installing three 25mm-long set screws (with thread locker) we attached three 3/4×1.75-inch spacer posts (again, with more thread locker) and tightened them all down securely.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system power steering bracket 018

17. The power steering bracket was then bolted to the three spacer posts with three 20mm-long cap screws. This is another spot that called for thread locker.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system power steering pulley 019

18. The PS pulley was already installed to the Maval pump, so we simply had to bolt it to the bracket using two 5/16×3-inch caps screws and lock washers.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system crank pulley bolts 020

19. The three 3/8×1 and 1/4-inch crank pulley bolts used special Belleville washers. These use a spring action to lock the bolts in place.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system tensioner beauty cover 021

20. We could then install the tensioner beauty cover using two 10-32×3/4-inch flat head screws and some thread locker.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system compressor manifold 022

21. Do not install the compressor manifold until you’re ready to install the A/C lines and charge the system. But, this is how it will look when you do install it using two 25mm-long cap screws and some antiseize.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system serpentine pulley kit 023

22. The pulley kit only took a couple of hours to install and it made the front of our LS3 look about as good as possible. Best of all, we had an engine that will easily fit into any Chevy we feel needs a shot of modern performance.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system granatelli xtreme power ls series coil packs 024

23. We installed a set of black Holley LS valve covers, which allowed us to mount the coils directly to the valve covers. We also used Granatelli Xtreme Power LS Series coil packs and matching insulated plug wires. We attached the coils, and the Art Morrison Enterprises headers, with more stainless bolts from our ARP accessory fastener kit.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system fast lsxr intake manifold 025

24. The stock LS3 intake manifold is only a little bit ugly, but this FAST 102mm LSXr intake, in their new black color, looks a ton better, especially with the billet red fuel logs instead of the GM deal. Getting rid of even a little clutter on an LS engine goes a long way in the looks department.

eddie motorsport s drive pulley system chevy performance ls3 engine 026

25. We think this looks a ton better than the original LS3 we started with, and as a big bonus all the parts will help us get this into or favorite Chevy and some will even add a few more horsepower to the equation.
